Daphne Smallwood, an ME.D in Art Education student at Tyler School of Art, has been selected to be a part of two highly competitive Artist-in-Residence programs: the Imagenes y Palabras and the Warm Heart Art residencies. Imagenes y Palabras is a small cultural organization in Spain that offers workshops, artist stays and classes throughout the year. The Warm Heart Art residency is located in Arusha, Tanzania, and Daphne will exhibit artwork that she has created during her residency there with other international artists. Daphne believes these residency experiences will help to expand her art practice and introduce her to artists from all over the world, as well as positively influence her practice as an art educator.

A native of Philadelphia, Daphne attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts before graduating from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. Since graduating, she has interned with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. She was an AmeriCorps member for City Year Philadelphia and currently works for an afterschool program at Belmont Charter School.
