Searching for Sharswood: Resilient Voices from North Philadelphia

Author: mary stiger
Panel Discussion at "Searching for Sharswood" opening

North Philadelphia's Sharswood neighborhood is in the midst of a major urban renewal project undertaken by the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA). This was the focus of Tyler Architecture professor Andrew Hart's Gurellia Altrusim course last semester, which challenges students to make positive changes in the neighborhood. The result of the course was a series of signs to be placed in Sharswood with a "Citizens Declaration" on them, to echo the "Declaration of Taking" signs posted by the PHA.

The exhibition, which was in the Architecture Building Lobby in February, is a joint effort between Temple, the University of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia University. Although it's no longer at Temple, you can still catch it at the University of Pennsylvania or Philadelphia University.

More coverage on the exhibition is lcoated here and here.
