LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
Welcome to the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture! This department is dedicated to teaching landscape architecture and horticulture to aspiring students. Located only 20 miles from Philadelphia, our department is part of a 187-acre campus arboretum. The campus is a living laboratory with a wonderful blend of charming historic gardens from the 1920’s. The campus is also home to numerous other gardens and demonstration projects that reflect contemporary environmental concerns.
We offer accredited professional degrees at the Master and Bachelor levels in Landscape Architecture and Bachelor and Associate degrees in Horticulture. An ecological based approach is at the heart of teaching for all programs. Our education model provides the basic knowledge, skills and mindset needed to prepare the next generation of professionals to address the emerging environmental and social challenges.
Along with the ecologically based curriculum, the unique aspects of our department include the integration of art and science, hands-on learning, and an intimate sense of community for students. Although we are considered a small department by university standards, we have a big reputation, presence and influence on the campus, university and the larger community. Our proximity to Philadelphia, considered a major hub of horticulture and landscape architecture, is a wonderful resource for our programs. We interact with world-renowned firms and organizations, and tap these resources for adjunct professors, speakers, guest critics, and for internships and employment opportunities for our students.
Our faculty and staff provide a supportive and safe learning environment where ideas can be formed, tested, and put into practice. We are committed to engendering a love of learning and cultivating creativity and innovation. Empowered with a vision for a better world, and confident in their knowledge, our students are prepared to be leaders in their professions. I invite you to get a first-hand look at our fabulous grounds, to meet our dedicated faculty, and to talk with our enthusiastic students. And also learn about numerous other educational opportunities in the Landscape Architecture & Horticulture Department and the Division of Architecture and Environmental Design at Temple University.
Looking forward to meeting you!
