AECAP Faculty Presenting at the 2017 National Art Education Association Convention

Art Education and Community Arts Practices faculty will be presenting several panels and presentations at the 2017 National Art Education Conference in NYC on March 2-4, 2017. Scheduled times for these panels and presentations are to be announced. March 3, 2017 CAC Forum: Alliance for Creative Change - Socially Engaged Arts Education Along with socially-engaged artists and community arts educations, Pepón Osorio will explore related goals, strategies, and possibilities for cross-pollination of practices, while considering the implications of creating a more direct dialogue between the disciplines. Changing the Discourse: Aren't We All "Special"? Lisa Kay will join members of the NAEA Special Needs in Art Education and the Women's Caucus on a panel to dialogue about the language of "special" in current educational discourse. Read More

Lisa Kay Awarded the 2016 NAEA Council of Exceptional Children VSA Peter J. Geisser Special Needs Educator of the Year

The National Art Education Association named Lisa Kay of Philadelphia, PA, as the recipient of the 2016 NAEA, The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) VSA Peter J. Geisser Special Needs Art Educator of the Year. This prestigious award, determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes an NAEA member who has made distinguished professional contributions to art education for students with special needs through scholarly writing, research, professional leadership, teaching, and/or community service. The award was presented at the NAEA National Convention in Chicago, IL, March 17-19, 2016. NAEA President Patricia Franklin states, "This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Lisa Kay exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession." Tyler Alum Desiree Bender leads workshop at NAEA!

Tyler alum Desiree Bender (M. Ed '15), now Program Manager of Fresh Artists in Philadelphia, hosted a booth with Barbara Chandler Allen at the 2016 National Art Education Association Conference in Chicago. They led a studio workshop on how to repurpose obsolete paint chips into a simple, impactful art lesson for all grade levels. Desiree is pictured above, on the far right. Read More

Tyler Alum Jamie Forslund presents at NAEA!

Recent Tyler alum Jamie Forslund (M.Ed. '15) presented at the 2016 National Art Education Association Conference in Chicago, IL! This presentation discussed her current research conducted in Philadelphia area public high schools. Forslund observed and interviewed art teachers and high school English Language Learner students in order to better understand the needs of ELL students, the needs of art teachers, and how both parties can be better served. The information gleaned from the study helped attendees gain perspective on how ELL students fit into the culture of a high school art classroom and learn how to provide scaffolding to contribute to the teaching skills needed to address this growing and vital population. Art Education Department to Represent Tyler School of Art/Temple University at the 2016 NAEA Conference

The Art Education Department will be representing Tyler School of Art/Temple University at the National Art Education Association Covention in Chicago, Illinois, March 17 - 19, 2016. Professor Emeritus Dr. Jo-Anna Moore is giving a presentation titled “Philosophy of Education, Imagination, and Art Teaching: Implications for Practice.” Professor Wendy Osterweil will present a hands-on workshop called, "Yes and…: Enlivening the Classroom with Quick Contemporary Art Activities." Dr. Andrea Kantrowitz will deliver a best practice lecture titled “Drawing the Visible and Invisible in Art and Science.” Dr Lisa Kay will present two best practice lectures titled:"Lead, Inspire, Hope: A Trauma-informed Art Education" and "Artful Coalitions: Challenging Adverse Adolescent Girls' Experiences through Art" and be a panelist on the Women's Caucus Feminist Leadership Panel. Dr. Lisa Kay Wins National Award

Tyler Faculty Member Wins National Award Dr. Lisa Kay, Assistant Professor, Art Education and Community Arts Practices, Tyler School of Art, Temple University is being honored with the Mary J. Rouse Award from the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Women's Caucus. The Rouse award is given annually to recognize the contributions of an early professional who has shown potential to make significant contributions in the art education profession. Kay will be presented with the award at the 2014 NAEA conference in March in San Diego, California.    Lisa said, "It was an honor to be considered for this award but actually receiving this recognition is beyond my wildest imagination. When I look at the long list of award winners whose work has shaped the field of art education, I am humbled. Seeing my name added to the lineage of art educators is an incredible honor, which supports my previous efforts and challenges me to manifest my most creative work."    Read More
