Sophomore Painting Exhibition

This exhibition, now on view in the Green Hallway, includes sophomore level paintings and drawings made during the Fall 2023 semester. In both Sophomore Painting and Intermediate Drawing, students develop a solid studio practice based on an intensive exploration of materials, subject matter and ideas. The emphasis is placed upon thinking through making, and making contact with what phenomenologists refer to as “the mind in the hand.”In Sophomore Painting, much of the semester's discussions revolve around various strategies for thinking about color and the materiality paint and how these formal qualities bring complexity to one's ideas.

The exhibition also includes a series of scrolls made in the ART 2502 Intermediate Drawing class, taught by Mark Shetabi. These scrolls are either five or 10 yards long and executed in a variety of wet and dry media. The scrolls offer a platform to examine ideas of time and passage in making and subject matter. Students work on these scrolls continuously for seven weeks.
