I like to look. This is a simple statement, but first-hand observation is often taken for granted. Most information and understanding about the world is acquired through mediated sources such as the internet and television.  I make my paintings based on places and situations that I have experienced. My goal is to translate the visual qualities that give a place its specificity. What gives a small cavernous space a mysterious or ominous quality? Can a history or narrative be found in an abandoned parking lot? I try to manipulate imagery on the canvas until I am able to articulate these sensibilities into my paintings. In some respects this process often fails because painting has limitations of scale and material. However, working within these limitations often leads to unexpected and exciting results. I can create new forms and images by attempting this impossible challenge. Rather than create an easily readable portrait of the places that I have been, I want my work to communicate the complicated and perplexing process of observing the physical world.
