Fibers & Material Studies

The Fibers & Material Studies studios are equipped with a computer lab for silk screening and digital printing, as well as a computerized loom, design software and large-format printer that can print on 46-inch wide bolts of cloth. The facility includes a large assembly area, dye room with ovens and mixing stations, loom room, yarn storage, undergraduate majors area, graduate studios, computer lab, materials processing room, drying racks, color corrected lighting and easy access to the freight elevator. Students explore the capabilities of these state-of-the-art tools while simultaneously stretching the boundaries of historical weaving and dyeing processes. Some Fibers students love to work sculpturally, on and off-loom, some are fascinated by quilting, painting and creating patterns on cloth, many are drawn to working with non-traditional materials such as Tyvek, latex or even newspaper. Fibers students examine every aspect of their field, studying the history and technology, aesthetics and processes of their craft.
