Charlie Cunningham

Charlie Cunningham is a multidisciplinary artist based in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, working primarily in sculpture, painting, and installation. His practice explores the tension between the grotesque and the beautiful, the visceral and the seductive, often folding humor into unsettling forms.

Drawing inspiration from campy cinematic special effects and contemporary visual culture, Cunningham’s work investigates the emotional and psychological undercurrents of materiality and form.

Cunningham began his artistic journey with formal academic training in representational art, grounding his practice in traditional techniques. He later earned a graduate degree focused on contemporary sculpture and installation, which expanded his approach to include unconventional materials and immersive spatial experiences.

Through tactile surfaces, theatrical composition, and a sharp eye for the absurd, Cunningham’s work seeks to confront viewers with the contradictions embedded in the human condition. He invites audiences to engage with discomfort, curiosity, and laughter in equal measure—challenging distinctions between high and low, beautiful and repulsive, sincere and satirical.
