Davis Hanscom Thal is a Philadelphia-based glass artist and educator whose practice explores the intersections of materiality, identity, and nature through a queer lens. A graduate of Temple University’s Film and Media Arts program, Thal transitioned from filmmaking to glassblowing, embracing the medium as both a conceptual and physical tool for expression and productivity. Thal has exhibited nationally and presented at the Glass Art Society’s 2022 International Conference in Tacoma, Washington, where they were among over 100 presenters from 17 countries. Their work often draws inspiration from the tension between natural chaos and structural rigidity, incorporating motifs of plant life and organic forms to examine themes of queerness, transformation, and resilience. In addition to maintaining a private flameworking studio in Philadelphia, Thal teaches and assists in glass fabrication throughout the Philadelphia region. Their educational approach emphasizes experimentation, material fluency, and the cultivation of personal voice, encouraging students to engage critically with both technique and concept showcasing their commitment to community and collaboration.
