Spaces, Resources and Opportunities

The Tyler Center for Art and Creative Exchange offers Tyler graduate students and recent alumni access to an expanded network of spaces, resources and opportunities in the heart of Philadelphia. Located in PAFA’s Hamilton Building, the Center encompasses 20,000 square feet of newly renovated facilities, including dedicated seminar, studio and office spaces that support the Post-MFA Fellowship Program, Critic-In-Residence, Tyler’s Master of Education in Art Education students and a forthcoming Curatorial Program. In addition to these spaces, the Tyler community has unlimited free access to PAFA’s museum and use of its archives and permanent collection for viewing and research.

Fellowship

The Studio Fellowship at the Center for Art and Creative Exchange offers Tyler MFA students a unique opportunity to continue their artistic practice in Philadelphia after graduation.

Based at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the heart of Philadelphia, the fellow-ship provides subsidized studio space and an intensive program of critical exchange with art world leaders including guest curators, critics, gallerists and artists through studio vis-its and related conversations.

The program offers 15 subsidized artist studios for post-MFA fellows, ranging from 300 to 550 square feet, and a 1,700-square-foot flex studio for fellow-led programming and collabo-rative use. Fellows also have access to PAFA’s broader facilities and resources for sculpture, printmaking and papermaking.The fellowship helps emerging artists continue their practice in Philadelphia while building professional momentum, expanding their networks, and strengthening post-graduate opportunities. It also serves as a hub for fellow-led program-ming, welcoming the broader community into open studios and other events that place the fellows’ work at the center of an active and expanding artistic community.

Critical Exchange

The Center for Art and Creative Exchange’s Critic-in-Residence program invites a leader in the visual arts field to contribute to Philadelphia’s arts discourse through writing, public dialogue and engagement with the city’s exhibitions and events.

Working in collaboration with media and arts organizations, the critic produces critical reflection that connects Philadelphia’s exhibitions, artists and public conversations to broader national and global currents in contemporary art.

For Tyler’s graduate students, the Critic-in-Residence creates opportunities to engage directly with a leading voice in contemporary art and criticism through dialogue, public programs and other forms of exchange. In addition to published writing, the Critic-in-Residence supports programs that bring artists, students and the public into closer conversation with contemporary art and criticism, stimulating critical conversations about artistic practice and the broader cultural landscape. The program strengthens Philadelphia’s cultural ecosystem by supporting informed writing, encouraging thoughtful exchange and expanding the reach of the city’s arts community.
