MFA Student Fibers & Material Studies

Originally from Pittsburgh, Will Grimm began sewing at a young age under the guidance of his grandmother. He earned a BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2019 and is a current MFA Candidate in Fiber at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia, PA.

His work has been exhibited nationally in cities including Baltimore, Cleveland, and San Diego, and featured in publications such as Fiber Art Now, Curated Quilts, and BMoreArt. Grimm is the proud father of one studio cat, and when not at his sewing machine can be found playing his Game Boy or reading scary stories.

Artist Statement

The closest I’ve come to articulating what purpose my work serves is via the term “diary entry.” My practice centers thinking by making and is rooted in the traditions of stitching and dyeing. Sewn textile-collage-tapestry-quilt-banners reflect the everyday existential ramblings I grapple with internally, emphasizing improvisation and material intuition. I hold a deep gratitude and fondness for the role textiles play in our lives, offering shelter, protection, and a space for connection. Scavenging found and otherwise discarded cloth from all over (my closet, deadstock dumps, the streets of Philadelphia…) pays homage to the [often overlooked] lived experience of fabric. At my core I believe in making for the sake of making, and making what will make me happy.
