Students place in international Land Art Generator competition

Author: tuh41424

Students in Eric Oskey's studio class submitted designs to the Land Art Generator Initiative's Melbourne design competition this past semester. "The goal of the Land Art Generator is to accelerate the transition to post-carbon economies by providing models of renewable energy infrastructure that add value to public space, inspire, and educate—while providing equitable power to thousands of homes around the world." Students were tasked to create a design that responds to the question "What does renewable energy infrastructure look like when it is woven into the fabric of the city?"   Kyle Taveira placed 4th out of hundreds of submissions for his project Dreamtime. (Pictured above and below)  As his elements sway in the wind they generate clean energy, read more about the technology and his project here. Read More

Elizabeth Duntemann to take residency at the Center for the Art and Architecture of Port Cities, Naples, Italy

Author: Jane DeRose Evans

Elizabeth (PhD candidate, Art History) writes, "I am pleased to share that I have accepted a 9-month Research Residency at the Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities/Centro per la Storia dell’Arte e dell’Architettura delle Città Portuali, in Naples, Italy. I will be part of an inaugural group of Ph.D. candidates invited to live and work on the grounds of the Museo e Real Bosco Capodimonte, at La Capraia. This residency will facilitate unprecedented access to resources in the city, foster professional connections with other graduates and scholars, and create a platform to share research across academic, museum, and public spheres. The residency project I have proposed to complete will contribute a vital strand to my dissertation research, which re-centers port cities, including Naples, as hubs of cultural production, to examine how art and architecture negotiated constructs of chronic infection and healing during the sixteenth century.   Read More

The Art of Student Teaching Exhibition

Author: Anonymous

Each year, the Art Education Department presents exhibitions of work done by student teachers and their pupils for display at the Stella Elkins Gallery. This year, four student teachers displayed the products of their time at a variety of schools as community members gathered in fellowship to appreciate the art made by friends and loved ones. Wendy Osterweil, the supervising professor of this group of students, was one of the Tyler officials present for this installation. “What’s unique about this show is that it’s a rather small group. Each student put a lot of time into this exhibition, and it shows.” The student teachers exhibiting were Brooke Mulroy, Madeline Willis, Maria Chambers, and Anna Capriotti. Read More

Rachel Brandoff Art Therapy Talk

Author: Michael Smaczylo

Recently, Tyler's Art Education and Community Arts Practices department held a discussion and presentation given by Dr. Rachel Brandoff about art therapy with families in crisis and trauma. Rachel is the coordinator of Art Therapy Specialization and Community and Trauma Counseling at Jefferson University. We were surprised to hear that trauma is  “not the exception, it’s the norm.” After an informative talk about how art therapists work with people who have experienced  trauma, we did little art activity with Dr. Brandoff’s favorite art material – pipe cleaners. We were instructed to focus on one personal goal, could be big or small, and the second part, we have to focus on a larger community goal and how our personal goal could connect to that. Some people connected their personal goals, and others linked them to a bigger sculpture. Make sure you’re following us so you don’t miss out on other events like this!   Read More
