Professional development is built into the Tyler Art curriculum, designed to help you confidently navigate your next steps after graduation.

Professional Practices

As a Tyler student, you’ll learn about the business of art as part of your coursework. Courses dedicated to developing your professional practice equip you with essential skills and knowledge to navigate creative industries with confidence. Topics include portfolio development, networking, exhibition preparation, grant writing, taxes for artists understanding legal and business aspects of being a professional artist, and employment in a creative occupation. By learning how to present yourself and your work effectively, you’ll be empowered to pursue a career in the arts, whether as an independent artist, designer, educator or creative entrepreneur.

Guest Lectures and Field Trips

Guest speakers and class field trips offer valuable opportunities to learn directly from creative professionals as they share their expertise. These experiences bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice, offering insight into a range of industries and career paths. They also broaden your perspective, connecting classroom concepts to the wider art world, and spark meaningful conversations about technique and context.

MFA Career Development

Tyler MFA students build a professional profile, connect with curators and gain practical exhibition and publication experience through several opportunities.

Annual Catalog

Intersections is the annual catalog of work from students in the MFA Program at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Published since 2012, Intersections is an interdisciplinary collaboration between second-year MFA studio art students and graduate art history students.

Annual Curated Group Exhibition

This curated exhibition offers a significant professional development opportunity for second-year MFA students. To prepare, students engage directly with a curator, discussing their work and receiving valuable feedback. This initiative provides our MFAs with a chance to build relationships with curators and build their CVs.

Solo Thesis Exhibitions

Each second-year MFA has the opportunity to install a public exhibition of their work at Tyler.
