Alumni Spotlight

Meet some of the remarkable graduates of Tyler’s PhD in Art History.

"The PhD in Art History program at Tyler brought me into a circle of incredibly supportive faculty mentors who guided my scholarship and efforts to get my work out into the world. I also received a range of grants from Tyler, including a Therese Dolan and Günther Haase Research Grant, Dean’s Support for Student Research, and a Dissertation Completion Grant, all of which made it possible for me to achieve my goals."

"I earned my second doctorate at Tyler, but it was that Ph.D. that taught me to be in love with learning. I became a much better writer. I learned how to see details in every element of my life. I began to understand and appreciate the vast and important role of languages, pushing myself to move into new spheres of discourse. I saw the intricacies of art everywhere. Beware of that fact, incoming students: you have neither seen nor experienced the world like you will after being a Tyler student. In short, it is like seeing the human experience in a much more nuanced and complex manner."

"I was a studio major in college before I pursued a graduate degree in art history. The Department of Art History is housed in Tyler, which means there are a lot of interactions and even collaborations with studio majors (MFAs). As a scholar of modern/contemporary art, it is important and instrumental to know the makers of art and understand their perspectives and practices."

"Our professors are so active, and they’re so dedicated to their research. Not every school is really interested in teaching or sharing their knowledge. Even professors who might not be teaching something in a student’s direct field of study will welcome everyone to take their classes. There’s something to be learned from every different time period or medium, and seeing different perspectives in class is so cool."
