Artist Statement

My work centers around childhood: the places of domesticity, the objects that surround us, and the memories that our minds and bodies drag along with us into adulthood. I’m interested in the secrets that spaces hold: the effort to hide ugly truths with decoration; insulation hidden in attics; decorative coverings for radiators; plumbing hidden behind cupboards; the feminine and masculine attributes we assign certain patterning and objects found in a home.
My work also investigates my personal history with patterns found in my childhood home, patterns that resemble wallpapers—a kind of quiet, comforting pattern, which I associate with my mother, who made dollhouse miniatures when I was a child—as well as stereograms, which are loud and unpredictable, which I associate with my father, who, after a traumatic brain injury and partial frontal lobotomy, became religious and violent, while collecting framed, religious-themed, magic eye posters. These unpredictable patterns resemble his quick temper and seizures.
I use drawing and printmaking techniques coupled with an illustrative, cartoony language to express these ideas on paper. I also incorporate collage work to make paper sculptures on their own or combined with old found objects that further develop the theme of a childhood long passed.
