Since the appearance of Paul Tough's New York Times Magazine feature, "Who Gets to Graduate", higher education administrators have considered non-financial barriers to student success and implemented strategies to overcome them. Art and design, with their own histories and traditions often far removed from the experiences of many students, present unique challenges to students, especially students of color. As art schools struggle to diversify their student populations (and their faculty and administration), what obstacles arise from the traditions and practices we seek to preserve and transmit to future generations? What opportunities for critical self-examination and transformation do diverse students bring?

A visit to Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, today it stands in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Artists are invited to install their work there and have played a large role in reviving the site. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone. In addition to artist residencies and commissions, Eastern State Penitentiary offers a wide range of educational programming for all ages.

Friday morning session at the Barnes Foundation

After the session, immerse yourself in the greatest private collection of post-impressionist and early-modern art. While most collections are grouped by chronology, style or genre, art at the Barnes Foundation is arranged in ensembles structured according to light, line, color and space—principles that founder Dr. Albert C. Barnes called, “the universal language of art.” Explore more than 3,000 masterpieces, including 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos, 16 Modiglianis, and 7 Van Goghs, plus textiles, metalwork, decorative objects, African sculptures, Native American ceramics and jewelry, and Pennsylvania German furniture.

Friday night dinner at the Mask and Wig Club

In Philadelphia, it would be hard to find an eating and drinking club as unique or colorful as the Mask and Wig Club. The Clubhouse’s history traces back to the early 1800’s, during which time it served successively as a church, a stable and carriage house, and dissecting rooms for Jefferson Medical College, before being acquired by Mask and Wig in 1894. The Clubhouse, designed by noted architect Wilson Eyre, is home to a fine collection of early Maxfield Parrish artwork and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is home to the oldest all-male collegiate musical comedy troupe in the United States and is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania.
