Gourma Land: A CARAS Grant Exhibition by Eliezer "El" Lompo

Gourma Land is a collection of prints and paintings that represent the Gourmantche people of eastern Burkina Faso. As a person of Gourmantche descent, my main goal is to visually represent the history, culture and traditions of my people through a traditional lens rather than a lens of colonial influence. The images created all connect to spiritual, cultural, and royal traditions and include portraits and scenes of important moments and people in Gourmantche history.

Image: King of the Hill, oil on canvas, 36”x48”. Portrait of Yendabli, 14th Gourmantche King with the horse he rode up the sacred baobab that stands behind him.
