TransDisciplinary Conversation Series

Musical Genre & Gender: Identity, Genre, (Mis)representation, and Appropriation
Co-facilitated by Dr. Shana Goldin-Perschbacher (Music).

Different kinds of music perform different kinds of identifications. While performances of identity are infinite, they also interact in some way with existing categories, often imposed by dominant cultures and reinforced through seemingly descriptive categories like musical genre. Sometimes when people challenge group (mis)representation or cultural appropriation, they make a case for cultural ownership and identity that can veer towards essentialism. How might we engage with the essentialist legacy of musical genres? And how might we honor the differing experiences that people have towards their relationship with identity categories?

No matter your discipline, if your work, research, practice or general interests are concerned with the formation of LGBTQ identity, affective community, genre creation and distinction, etc., please join us for the conversation!

Each session will be co-facilitated by a faculty member and one graduate student.  We will meet in different buildings on the Temple campuses, coinciding with the department of the faculty member. Dinner will be provided! Any questions? Please email transdis@temple.edu.
