David Riz (BArch '85)

David Riz (BArch '85) is a principal at Ballinger, a leading national firm in the areas of academic, research, healthcare and corporate planning and design. By promoting open and diverse collaborative exchanges among a range of stakeholders, Riz helps realize ethical and beautiful designs where people learn, work and live.

Prior to this position, Riz was a partner at KieranTimberlake—a practice recognized for its environmental ethos, research expertise and innovative design. In his nearly 20 years at KieranTimberlake, he led many award-winning projects—several of which have been featured in publications like Architect, Architectural Record, Metropolis, TIME, The New York Times and Wired—including those at Cornell University; University of California, Los Angeles; Pennsylvania State University; University of Washington and Iowa State University (pictured above).

He is a contributing writer to Taiwan’s Interior Magazine, has published in numerous architectural journals and books and is a frequent lecturer and juror at universities and conferences where he has spoken about the integration of research and design. In 2016, Riz was inducted into the American Institute of Architects’ College of Fellows by a jury of his peers—one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member, recognizing the achievements of an architect as an individual but also those conributions to both architecture and society.
