Stephen Anderson is a licensed architect, architectural educator, and researcher focusing on the ethical and civic dimensions of architecture; the intersection of cities, nature, and architecture, especially regarding concepts of nature and human nature and their relation to material form; and the natural tensions and potentials that arise between architectural theatricality and the practices and institutions of everyday life. His current research explores concepts of urbanity in the architectural works of Norwegian Pritzker Prize laureate, Sverre Fehn.
Stephen’s extensive work as an architectural educator spans 20 years. His teaching approach combines foundational architectural theory with collaborated projects and fabrication, emphasizing the primacy of place and the role of buildings in cultural participation and social relations. He primarily teaches architectural theory, history, and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and teaches in Temple University’s Honors and General Education programs.
