Artist Statement

My current work explores the Latinx diaspora experience, delving into questions surrounding representation and identity within a landscape marked by debilitation, exhaustion, trauma, and a prevailing climate of negative affect. This exploration reveals the struggle for visibility and empowerment within contemporary socio-political, economic, and cultural structures. While immigrants are frequently discussed in civil, political, and economic contexts, their individual and collective affect in the United States is seldom discussed.

"Edward Soja's concept of the 'Third Space' describes the liminal space many migrants occupy—between cultures and nationalities, physical and imagined or represented spaces. In this context, migrants forge a sense of place, home, and identity. My current work explores this space using lens media techniques, incorporating self-portraiture and blending factual and fictional elements to reimagine the migrant experience. I view this 'third space' as an active site of translation, transmission, and performance—a realm of possibilities and potentialities, a 'brown space' not confined to the boundaries of 'Latinidad,' but rather a form of collectivity transcending rigid group identities.
