Artist Statement
The work in this show presents a daydream of mine: to be not only enraptured by “real” benevolent supernatural forces (who wouldn’t?), but also to be implicated in the mythmaking and knowledge production that would inevitably surround them. I envy the world’s many writers of scripture who have had the chance to believe they were on the leading edge of the utmost magnanimity, as well as the millions of people today who feel that they have inherited something useful from them. Though I wish desperately to share in what seems like genuine passion and comfort, I––likely as a consequence of having a bad attitude or being queer, or likelier still, both––do not. I can, however, pretend, and in doing so trick myself into feeling, even briefly, that there is ancient wisdom for us yet to be invented which will more adequately address the unyielding strangeness of our lives.
