Artist Statement

I make videos of myself performing actions, movements and meditations in familiar everyday settings. My work explores the ways that social constructs detract from personal agency. The pace of modern life prioritizes the requirements of our immediate circumstances, and as a result daily life can make global problems feel remote and removed. Traditional American values and neoliberal principles have shifted responsibility onto the individual, thus drawing focus away from our collective problems. Working through non-narrative video and sound performance, I am questioning the role of individualism and how it relates to our own agency. I believe awareness can create empathy, and empathy can in turn lead to action. Life is beautiful; life is dreadful. To live intentionally is to accept it as both.
