Artist Statement
My paintings deal with sight, literally, and as a metaphor for knowing. Sight, as mediated by the biological limitations of our anatomy, is incomplete, meaning we rely on abstractions to make sense of material and immaterial reality. In response, my work generates abstractions which continuously reorganize the perceivable in an effort to understand the whole from the parts.
With this mindset, I work to bring disparate parts together on a plane. Acknowledging our limits means acknowledging a greater whole, a hope not yet realized but in the process of being revealed. Beholding clarifies that future hope, a hope of improved sight.
I abstract from observation utilizing the grid and the ribbon motif to define space and establish proximity. I build compositions through repetition, analyzing the translation of information from 3D to 2D. I engage with processes which allow a literal reframing of certain moments outside of their painted whole.
These are all strategies for beholding, the essential, undiluted impulse of the desire to see more clearly. It includes the admission of flawed sight and the hope for an improved one. There is an excitement knowing we did not comprehend all at first glance and that there is so much more to learn.
