Artist Statement

Afia Diary is an exploration of the mother’s role in different family dynamics throughout the continent and the diaspora. Through the use of the hermeneutic phenomenology research methods, one is able to understand and express their experience through a first person point of view (Wojnar,Swason 2007). Offering viewers, a since of vulnerability and insight on their relationship with maternal figures. The sociological perspective on identity explores one’s relationship between self and society which molds identity, through social categorization, social comparison which creates social identity (Stryker,1980). Utilizing photo voice, as a tool to guide community research through photos and documents to relive past and current experiences (Wang & Burris 1994,1997).
