Dominique Ellis is a visual artist, researcher and educator who explores the theme of vernacular. Her interest in both sociolinguistics and architecture is linked by the word vernacular. The content of her present body of work is an abstraction of architecture, nature, and language in relation to the urban spaces of Philadelphia. In particular, she focuses on vacant lots as a point of departure to imagining how to reactivate blighted properties.

Prior to pursuing her M.F.A. in printmaking, at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, she was awarded a U.S. Fulbright student scholarship for Egypt, as well as an Arabic language grant for 2009-2010 and was based in Cairo, Egypt. She earned her B.F.A., at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with a dual-emphasis in ceramics and printmaking. Also, Dominique served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, from 2006-2008, working for the Moroccan Ministry of Handicrafts with rural Moroccan potters.
