Documentary Diary Dream

My point of departure for the exhibition is the film I made Goodbye Mr. Kim in 2012, an introspective film that unravels a stream of resonating moments mirrored by my life. The film exemplifies my artistic endeavor to reflect on a society through the medium of individuals. It was unrealistic experience after all. I used to think that people grow as we get older one year at a time and something like a social change gradually takes place over decades. But it is not like that. It happens overnight. It happens so ordinarily that people somehow manage to pretend as if nothing happened. In 1988, South Korea was experiencing a dramatic social change epitomized by 88 Seoul Olympic, a historical trajectory, a potent symbol of the end of the bad days, announcing the world that we have overcome political as well as economical tragedies and are ready to become a prosperous country. While the fervent social aspiration was dreamt and symbolized by means of the Olympic ceremony at Seoul Olympic stadium in 1988, my childhood’s dream came true. I titled my exhibition as “Documentary Diary Dream”, alluding to the intersection where an individual’s everyday life and a historical juncture overlap.
