Artist Statement

I ask people to sit with the difficulty and delight of human relationships. I record Zoom conversations with my friends about the messiness of cultivating chosen family. As we talk, we each enact a playful, tactile performance of playing in mud. I have specific tools I use in my portion of the performance: brightly colored gloves, a painted shovel, vessels to gather soil, and handmade paper. I pour brightly pigmented paper pulp to create large, textured sheets of paper. The paper serves multiple roles as apron-garment that I wear and tablecloth-stage for the performance. Throughout the performance, the paper tears, gets wet and muddy, and documents the experience. The materials that I gather are then embedded into the next piece of paper, and the next iteration of the performance. This work moves between serious and silly, all with the goal of thinking through building new versions of community together.
