Artist Statement
Whether through ceramic pottery, sculpture, photography, or mural art, Isaac treats each piece as a monument that reflects the voices, emotions, and experiences of his environment. Beginning in the ceramic field, Isaac is mindful of the longevity and durability of the medium. Countless peoples in history have told their stories through clay and their work is still around centuries later to inspire us today. Myths and legends, larger than life figures, gods, kings and queens adorn ancient pottery and give us insight into our past and ourselves. Isaac brings the monumental into everyday life through cups, plates, bowls, pitchers, and jars. He portrays cultural icons and the people around him, not as mere mortals but how they exist in his own psyche. Heroes who are larger than life. Just as Monuments are erected to capture the essence or spirit of an individual and a people, Isaac brings his contemporary heroic figures to his hand thrown pottery to elevate them to a mythic status. Similarly Isaac is able to recreate himself in his work. In the world Isaac creates in his pots he is able to take on different personas and identities.
