Artist Statement

My practice meanders between painting and weaving, reflecting on the transition from life to death, rituals related to mourning, and celebrating past lives. I am thinking through using imagination to expand the possibilities of afterlife, letting the mystery give us the space to remember and honor our loved ones rather than fill us with fear of the unknown. Images are rendered through symbols and sigils developed through research into personal narratives, mourning history, and altered states of consciousness. These symbols are collected and arranged throughout my work to create rituals, and remembrances. The bright and vibrant colors are chosen as a way to show love and care in grief rather than laying bare the pain and sadness that is experienced through this kind of loss. By looking at relationships with death and questions surrounding the abstract nature of the afterlife, I strive to share personal experiences through my work. In hopes of being a part of a community that speaks openly about death and dying as an act of communal healing and catharsis.
