My work explores creating new meaning through the transformation and repetition of plastic, a material commonly used in everyday life.
Throughout history, humans have continually invented new materials to make life richer and more convenient. Among them, plastic has become a significant material that has driven innovative changes in modern society. Plastic is widely used in medicine, architecture, electronics, and everyday items due to its lightness, durability, mass production capabilities, and affordability. Plastic is not only a convenient and innovative material, but it has also become an essential and inherent part of modern society.
We experience the abundance created by plastic daily, through our hands, mouths, and skin. As a result, plastic has become an indispensable material that has permeated our bodies and the environment, and a disposable-centered consumer culture has firmly taken root in our lives.
In my work, the repetition of plastic forms and textures is based on the concept of 'semantic association.' The plastic fragments retain traces of their original shape and visual familiarity, while their transformed forms evoke new interpretations. This transformation is not merely a material change, but one that reimagines plastic as a new form of jewelry, opening the possibility for interpretation from an original perspective. For example, the prongs or handle of a plastic fork naturally morph into organic flower-like and natural forms, prompting the audience to engage with the contrast between familiar, everyday materials and their transformed appearances, sparking new interpretations and questions. Additionally, this process offers an opportunity to experience plastic being restructured not just for its material value, but also as an artistic and philosophical symbol.
My work focuses on transforming the everyday, familiar material of plastic to create new stories and messages within it. This goes beyond the realm of resource reuse and engages in a process that draws out new recognition and value from materials in our daily lives.
