Photography

The Tyler School of Art and Architecture’s Photography Program offers students close mentorship, access to state-of-the-art facilities and an interdisciplinary approach that helps students grow as artists and image makers in traditional and emerging digital technologies.

Tyler faculty bring a wide range of expertise to the students who join Tyler Photography’s supportive and collaborative community, helping them find pathways to meaningful expression and success. Students take advantage of the school’s location at a large research university in Philadelphia, a vibrant art center with a pioneering photography tradition, to find internships and jobs, explore museums and galleries, launch creative practices and start businesses.

Facilities

  • Cutting-edge digital labs and studios with ample computer workstations, film and print scanners, color-calibrated displays, large-format pigment printers, a laser cutter and a 3-D printer
  • Dedicated lighting studio and print-finishing area with cold and dry-mount presses
  • First-class darkroom spaces where students can work with black-and-white film, or work with some of photography’s earliest forms, such as cyanotype, platinum-palladium printing or tintypes
  • Access to a substantial equipment library, including tripods, cameras, medium-format digital backs, LED lighting kits and other specialized high-end equipment

    Hazziza Abdullah (MFA '20)

    Hazziza Abdullah (MFA '20) was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Most recently she is the recipient of an InLiquid Wind Fellowship. She received her BS from Lincoln University, PA in Visual Arts. She received her MFA in Photography from Temple University, Tyler School of Art, PA. Abdullah's work has been displayed at Galarie Marie, NJ and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, NY. She teaches Digital Photography and continues to use her photography to give voice to people who often do not have one. Abdullah uses her photography to address social issues and challenge societal stereotypes often manipulating darkness and light. She also often incorporates moving image pieces into her work. More
