Instructions /Dual site installation, backdrops, computers / 2011 Created specifically for the dual site exhibition, "Inscrutable", located at UD@Crane and Asian Arts Initiative. Computers were set up on both sites for audience to participate in skyping the other site. However, the participants did not know the location of the other end - fake backdrops were created to disguise the locations. Same sets of instructions were provided on both sites. The following instructions were given to participants: “the person on the other side does not know where you are skyping from. Do not speak English during your interaction. Simple conversation cheat sheets of five different languages are provided, and you can use hand gestures to express yourself if no words are available.” Languages of cheat sheets provided: Dutch, Mandarin, German, Filipino, and Swahili. This piece was inspired by two encounters: 1. the imperfection of Google text. 2. a Foochow bible written English alphabet, but spelled in Foochow phonetically, which enables the English reader to "speak" Foochow.
