Artist Statement

This body of work stems from growing up and creating work about my familial history that was often empty of physical material. For a considerable part of my childhood and adolescence, I listened to stories about how dedicated and hardworking my family members were but how they still lacked the money for necessities which meant they did not have the luxury of family heirlooms. Oral history was always another option for remembering family experiences; however, my family declined; even today, there is a bit of shame or denial of pity that comes with telling the raw realities of growing up in the lower class.
Given my family's past, I felt the need to leave something behind for my family and others to understand the struggles faced by the lower class. I found a hole and needed to fill it, which brought me to archiving my life, experiences, travels, relationships, etc. My family never had the chance to leave things behind for others; due to their struggles and sacrifices, I now am in a position in society where I can produce the artifacts they have never had the opportunity to do.
