Artist Statement

My work contends with the landscape that I stumble through as a gay white man living in an era of disease, racial reckoning, ecological collapse, and boredom (or lack thereof). Inspired by the history of figuration in the western cannon and using the physical properties of printmaking, I allow space for narrative and meaning to unfold organically along the roughly symmetrical lines of image reversal or through ghost printing with stencils and shifts in pressure. The resulting monotypes interlock in the grand tradition of monumental printmaking to create concrete, cohesive panoramas or amorphous, portalled spaces linked through form and color. Unlike the monumental, multi-plate prints of the early modern era, which were printed in the multiple and disseminated across Europe as propagandistic campaigns of influence, my works are one-offs, a retooling of the essential purpose and character of printmaking.
