The Sculpture program at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture cultivates and promotes exploration, unabashed experimentation, intellectual commitment and rigor through a wide range of media, processes and approaches.
Tyler Sculpture students enter a lively community of innovative artists, thinkers and creators who engage contemporary practice in a myriad of forms. Students develop the skills to pursue a range of pathways, including object making, socially-engaged work, video and lens-based media, installation, sound, performance, evolving technologies, research-based practices, digital fabrication, interdisciplinary projects and public practice.
Students also have access to extensive resources that inform and advance their practice as part of Temple—a large, public research university, located in Philadelphia, an historic city with a vibrant arts scene. Working closely with an award-winning faculty of artists in Tyler’s state-of-the-art, expansive facilities (which include dedicated metal, wood and mold-making shops, new media labs and a sound recording booth), students are challenged to grow creatively, intellectually and emotionally through risk-taking, technical proficiency and expanded practical knowledge.
Facilities
- More than 16,000 square feet of studio space that includes a woodshop, metal fabrication shop and mold-making facilities with all of the tools necessary for sculpture
- Expansive studio space
- Two 2-ton gantry cranes, smaller hoists and a 1000-square-foot outdoor assembly pad
- Video, sound and projection equipment; access to Tyler’s technology resources, such as 3D printers and virtual reality, as well as a Media Outpost Room
- Access to Temple University’s technology resources through strong relationships with the Boyer College of Music and Dance; the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts; and Temple Libraries' Digital Scholarship Center
The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Fellowship in Sculpture (for MFA Alumni)
Upon completion of their studies, Tyler MFA Sculpture students become eligible to apply for The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Fellowship in Sculpture, an honorary annual grant awarded for past excellence and future promise to help transition from an academic environment to professional studio practice.

Visiting artists and lecturers
Tyler’s renowned Critical Dialogue series and a host of other visiting artist and lecture series bring influential artists, curators, critics, dealers, filmmakers, art historians and more to enrich the Tyler Sculpture experience and interact with students. MFA students gain additional access to prominent thinkers and makers through studio visits, critiques and lecture programs.
