      Considered Service Gwendolyn Yoppolo $900 Tuition + $50 non-refundable registration fee $100 Materials Fee As mindful makers, we consider the larger purposes served by our work, choosing aesthetic processes and qualities that manifest our in the shaping of gestures and lives.  During these two weeks, we will reflect upon our purpose as makers within contemporary culture, and build prototypes for a new world.  This workshop will explore visual dialogue to clarify our visions through two- and three- dimensional sketches, while refining the conveyed meaning.    The Massive Wheel Jason Briggs $900 Tuition + $50 non-refundable registration fee $100 Materials Fee Wheel working as a technique is not reserved just for pots.  This workshop will re-introduce the wheel as a tool for sculptural production by bridging the challenges for building sculptures out of separate parts. We will discuss biomorphism, elusive enigmatic designs, and surface.  Our focus will be on assembling multiple non-pottery forms as a way to make a voluptuous curving piece.   • Business Practices for Illustrators

      Saturday July 26, 1:00-5:00pm

      This course is designed for recent graduates or creative professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in illustration but lack the business acumen to do so. It will help students begin to monetize their artwork and understand the fundamentals of starting and running a freelance business. Course Topics Include: ​Identifying a target market Generating a mailing list Direct Mail Promotion Email Promotion Online Promotion Pricing Contracts Invoicing Diversifying your work Course Goals: Design a direct mail promo piece and/or email promotion Increase online profile via social networking Design an invoice   *PLEASE NOTE: Students must bring 8-12 samples of current work to the first day of class. Work can be shown in hard copy, as a pdf, or as an online portfolio. TUITION $350 + $50 non-refundable registration fee + $25 lab fee = TOTAL $425   (see notes below)

  • In Production: Film & Video Workshop

      9:30am - 3:30pm

      You’ve seen them in theaters, living rooms, and on the internet. Now try out your own movie-making skills at Tyler’s Film & Video Summer Workshop! Students will perform in, direct, and edit their own collaborative videos and view them on the large screen on the last day. Learn the basics of lighting, audio, motion, and framing in this blockbuster two-week session. Digital camera not required. Appropriate for beginners. TUITION: $750 (includes a $50 non-refundable registration fee)

  • Architecture Institute

      Session II: July 11 - July 22
      10:00am - 4:00pm

      Open to students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Philadelphia has a robust architectural history, and provides an ideal setting in which to learn about important architectural principles! To that end, we have created a rigorous introduction to the field of architecture designed to mirror Tyler’s Architecture Foundations Program. This course focuses on the visual language of architectural representation and design; and processes related to constructing and understanding the built environment. Students will learn the architectural techniques of drawing, drafting and model making. Through design problems, lectures and site visits, students will come to understand that architecture is a creative search based on both imagination and precedents. Please note there is a $100 course fee for this workshop. TUITION One Session: $1,000, plus $100 course fee Payment plans and limited need-based aid are available.   • Junior Art Workshop

      Open to students entering 8th or 9th grade. This program is designed to bridge the span between middle and high school art experiences. The Junior Art Workshop provides practical techniques in drawing from life, the chance to work in a college ceramics studio, and a boost to your creative problem solving ability! Students will be challenged to use both conventional and non-conventional art materials in a drawing workshop and a 3D sculpture workshop.  

  • Summer Portfolio Bootcamp

      10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

      Are you planning to apply to an art school? This workshop is for you! Designed as intensive portfolio preparation class for 11th and 12th graders, students leave Portfolio Boot Camp with finished pieces that will distinguish them as exceptional artists. Recognizing that observational drawing is often the most important feature an admissions counselor considers when reviewing a portfolio, every Boot Camp schedules time for drawing from still-life, figure models and other live sources. With individual guidance from the instructor and visits from Tyler's Admissions Counselors, students gain an understanding of image presentation, learn about the college admissions process and develop work to flesh out their portfolios that highlight their strengths. Previous observational drawing experience required. Please note there is a $50 model fee per session.

  • Portraits

      Session I: June 26 - July 7 /
      AM Session

      The art of portraiture has been around for centuries! Working from extended poses with models, other students and yourself, you will investigate the anatomy of the face and head. Exercises are designed to give students a deeper understanding of facial proportions and human expression. Both composition and technique will be emphasized in a variety of drawing media. Previous drawing experience is required. *PLEASE NOTE: This Workshop requires an addtional $50 model fee.

  • Painting in Oils

      Session I: June 26 - July 7 /
      AM Session

      Have you always wanted to learn the time-honored tradition of oil painting? A unique series of oil painting studies will teach students to creatively investigate the elements of color, texture and surface. Working from still life setups, landscapes, and collage, students will learn to create form in a balanced composition. Methods and materials will be demonstrated. Individual Development is stressed through one-on-one critique. Previous drawing experience required. Please note there is a $50 model fee for each workshop.

  • Ceramics: Form and Function

      Session I: June 26 - July 7 /
      AM Session

      Come discover the many potentials of creating with clay! Designed as a hands-on primer to the medium of clay, students will leave this workshop with a greater understanding of art making in three dimensions. In-depth ceramic projects explore the processes of throwing, sculpting, and hand building. Students will also experiment with various texturing, glazing and finishing techniques. The small class size and individual attention allows both beginning and experienced students to pursue their own creative interests. No previous experience required. Please note there is a $50 materials fee.

  • Figure Drawing

      Session I: June 26 - July 7 /
      PM Session

      This workshop is based on the idea that the human figure is a gift to the artist. Focus is placed on figure studies of professional models, clothed and nude. You will examine the elements of drawing the human figure, and enhance observational drawing skills by investigating proportion, form and gesture, and composition. This is an important class for students looking to enhance a college admissions portfolio! Previous observational drawing experience is required.
