Community Arts Practices Addresses Inequities Created by Climate Change

The Trust for Public Land Heat Response PHL project was launched to create public art that addresses the question: “Why should we care about urban heat and what can we do about it?” The organization, along with its team of artists and community leads, will help elevate community voices and  creatively amplify their lived experiences to drive policy change and achieve equity across Philadelphia neighborhoods in response to rising temperatures.  Members of the Tyler School of Art and Architecture’s Community Arts Practices (CAP) are supporting this project. Art Therapy Graduate Takes First Prize for Research, Fieldwork

  Tyler alumna’s interdisciplinary scholarship at local rehabilitation facility wins AATA award Elizabeth Allen (BA ‘20), a graduate of the Tyler School of Art and Architecture Art Therapy Program, has earned first prize at the annual American Art Therapy Association (AATA) conference’s poster presentation competition. Her presentation, titled “Common Threads: Community Weaving with Patients with Cognitive and Physical Trauma,” was given virtually in late January as part of the 2020 AATA conference, which delayed a few panels due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tyler’s Pepón Osorio in New Whitney Exhibition

Tyler’s Laura H. Carnell Professor of Community Art in Community Arts Practices, Pepón Osorio, is featured in the exhibition, Making Knowing: Craft in Art, 1950–2019, now through February 2022 at The Whitney Museum of American Art. The show foregrounds how visual artists have explored the materials, methods, and strategies of craft over the past seven decades. The show features “Angel: The Shoe Shiner” (1993) by Osorio. This trinket-encrusted throne pays tribute to a shoe shiner named Angel, whom the artist frequented for years. "His job was about giving and bringing light to other people," Osorio explained, "but very little was given to him. So I made this piece in his honor." To learn more about the exhibition, click here. Faculty Renee Jackson honored by PAEA as Outstanding Art Educator

Renee Jackson, assistant professor and program head of Art Education, is the recipient of the 2020 Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA) Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator Award at the PAEA Conference (October 16–17, 2020) for her research and teaching related to social justice art education and the integration of game-design and game-play as collaborative art forms and learning tools. “I am very proud and honored to be recognized by PAEA, the largest state art education association in the United States, fueled by dedicated, passionate art educators,” said Jackson. Lisa Kay Reappointed as Chair of AECAP

Lisa Kay, Associate Professor and Program Head of Art Therapy has been reappointed as Department Chair of Art Education & Community Arts Practices (AECAP) for a second three-year term through the academic year 2022–23. As chair, Kay has helped reshape the MEd program by emphasizing the identities of the artist-, educator- and arts-based researcher; developed the Art Therapy Program—one of the few undergraduate programs in the United States situated in an art and architecture school within an urban public university—and continued to expand Community Arts Practices to offer socially-engaged art that emphasizes both the creative object and its social implications.
