Architecture, Facilities and Preservation programs

The Architecture and Environmental Design (AED) Department at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture offers a broad range of degree pathways in that prepare a diverse community of students to be leaders and innovators in built-environment design, from sustainable buildings and urban planning to ecological restoration, and more.

With curricula centered on design studio and collaborative workshops, students in architecture, historic preservation, facilities management and planning work alongside each other to address the current and future challenges of their disciplines and society at large. The AED Department is a collaborative community of thinkers and makers that embraces learners of all styles and is committed to providing students with a full menu of options for practice in the professional world—all supported by a faculty of forward-thinking practicing professionals and researchers.

Tyler Architecture students have access to the resources of Temple, a large, public research university; the richness of architecture and design across the Philadelphia region, offering limitless possibilities for experiential learning; and a network of alumni in leading firms around the region who provide opportunities for mentorship and internships.

Tyler Architecture facilities

  • Programs are housed in a 50,000-square-foot, four-story building with expansive design studios, collaboration labs, classrooms and exhibition spaces—all devoted solely to students in architecture and related disciplines
  • Fabrication tools and printing facilities in labs and studios, including 3-D printers, laser cutters, AR/VR design stations, digital routers, woodshop work stations, plotters, printers and more
  • Additional maker facilities for student experimentation and innovation in connected Tyler Art Building
  • Large exterior courtyard for studio projects

Community events and partnerships
Tyler Architecture’s connections with the Philadelphia AIA, the Preservation Alliance, Green Building United, the International Facilities Management Association and other organizations provide frameworks for students that parallel their educational experience. 

Student communities
Active student groups include the American Institute of Architecture Students, the Temple University Facilities Management Association, the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students, the Architecture Lobby and the Temple Chapter of Tau Sigma Delta, the National Honor Society for Architecture and Allied Arts.

The Philadelphia Architecture and Design College Fair is a great opportunity for high school and college students, parents, teachers and counselors to learn about programs in architecture and the environmental design disciplines.
