Tyler Graduate Student Wins First Prize in Fiber Art Now Juried Exhibition

Fibers & Materials Studies graduate student Mika Obayashi received first prize in Excellence in Fibers IX, a juried exhibition by the publication Fiber Art Now. Over 1,200 artworks were submitted for consideration. The installation, titled “Gospel of Three Dimensions,” was originally on view in the Jewett Art Gallery at Wellesley College from September 6 through October 28, 2022. The piece is made of abaca paper, cotton cord, and indigo dye, and is created to be a partially immersive experience, giving viewers the opportunity to step into the sculpture. This is in line with Obayashi’s interest in examining conventional experiences of space in her work.  Read More

Kalila Jones (BFA ’24) Featured in Fiber Art Now

When Fibers & Material Studies student Kalila Jones (BFA ’24) describes what she loves best about her chosen medium, her response is both practical and poetic.“I’m interested in the sheer possibilities of fiber arts. We’re around fibers all the time, from the clothes that we wear to our bedspreads,” they said. “I find that very fulfilling about fibers— they’re all around my life. I can see fibers. I can touch them and feel how comfortable they are. I love that tactile feeling about it.” Read More

Alumna Shows Pride through Philly's Chinese Lantern Festival

Journeying from China to Philadelphia to study at Temple nearly 10 years ago, Ellen Zhang, TYL ’17, now gets to showcase the pride she has in her heritage as arts and culture manager at the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival. Temple's Scientista Chapter Shares Collaborative Exhibit

Temple’s chapter of Scientista, a national foundation built around empowering women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) fields, recently curated an open-call exhibition for STEMM-related artwork. For students like Hajra Sohail (CST ‘23), a biology major with an art minor, this project was an eye-opener to the kinds of creative collaboration that non-art disciplines can enjoy. Projects were varied, incorporating an array of mediums like painting, drawing, sculpture, and fibers.  Read More
