Art Therapy Comes to Tyler

There’s a new major coming to Tyler that many have been excited for over the past few years! In Fall 2017, Art Therapy came to campus as a new Bachelor of Arts degree. With a new major comes a lot of questions, so I took the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Lisa Kay, one of the advocates for Art Therapy as a major at Temple. Pepón Osorio wins College Art Association's 2018 Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement

January keeps getting better for Pepón Osorio, Laura Carnell Professor of Community Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. The College Art Association (CAA) announced today that Pepón had been named the 2018 Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement—only nine days after learning he had won a United States Artists fellowship.Pepón is the first artist of Puerto Rican descent to win the award. In a press release, CAA cited his "meticulous installations incorporating the memories, experiences and cultural and religious iconography of Latino communities and family dynamics."He joins a select 31-member club. Previous winners of the award include Hans Haacke, David Hammons, Jacob Lawrence, Yvonne Rainer and Nancy Spero. Read More

Ver de lejos Exhibition Reception

Some pictures from last Friday’s Ver De Lejos/To See from Afar show!This gallery showed work from the Mann Older Adult Center bilingual painting course, led by Jamie Forslund. These artists explore themes of memory, heritage, and beauty by connecting their lives in Philadelphia with memories of growing up in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.The reception featured several artists present talking about their process and experience, as well as Art Educator Jamie Forslund talking about her experience teaching in a bilingual community arts program. Forslund highlighted the differences between teaching older adults from teaching children and adolescents, as well as the inspiration for some of the projects in the exhibition.   Read More
