Student Teachers Attend Workshop with Christina Lukac, Adaptive Arts Educator

On Saturday April 6, 2019, Student Teachers attended a workshop with Christina Lukac, Adaptive Arts Educator at Olney Charter High School, titled "Art Making Strategies for Individuals in the Life Skills & Autism Support Classroom". The workshop focused on strategies for teaching art in a wide range of settings for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  Christina Lukac is an artist and educator who has worked with a wide range of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the non-profit and general education setting. She presented her research at the 2017 International Conference on Disability Studies, Art, and Education in Helsinki, Finland. Christina holds BFA with Art Education Concentration from Tyler Scool of Art and a Masters degree in Art Education with a Focus on Special Populations from Moore College of Art and Design.  Read More

The Art of Student Teaching Exhibition

Each year, the Art Education Department presents exhibitions of work done by student teachers and their pupils for display at the Stella Elkins Gallery. This year, four student teachers displayed the products of their time at a variety of schools as community members gathered in fellowship to appreciate the art made by friends and loved ones. Wendy Osterweil, the supervising professor of this group of students, was one of the Tyler officials present for this installation. “What’s unique about this show is that it’s a rather small group. Each student put a lot of time into this exhibition, and it shows.” The student teachers exhibiting were Brooke Mulroy, Madeline Willis, Maria Chambers, and Anna Capriotti. Read More

Rachel Brandoff Art Therapy Talk

Recently, Tyler's Art Education and Community Arts Practices department held a discussion and presentation given by Dr. Rachel Brandoff about art therapy with families in crisis and trauma. Rachel is the coordinator of Art Therapy Specialization and Community and Trauma Counseling at Jefferson University. We were surprised to hear that trauma is  “not the exception, it’s the norm.” After an informative talk about how art therapists work with people who have experienced  trauma, we did little art activity with Dr. Brandoff’s favorite art material – pipe cleaners. We were instructed to focus on one personal goal, could be big or small, and the second part, we have to focus on a larger community goal and how our personal goal could connect to that. Art Therapy Comes to Tyler

There’s a new major coming to Tyler that many have been excited for over the past few years! In Fall 2017, Art Therapy came to campus as a new Bachelor of Arts degree. With a new major comes a lot of questions, so I took the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Lisa Kay, one of the advocates for Art Therapy as a major at Temple. Dr. Kay, along with many others, has been working on the creation of this major for some time now and was happy to answer some of the questions that I had about the major. “The major came about over a long period of time,” Dr. Kay stated. “We started to have conversations in 2013. Getting a new degree through bureaucratic channels took quite some time. Tyler Admissions fielded emails from students interested in the degree for a long time, with the Foundations Department and Visual Studies program also keeping tabs on interest from students. We moved forward after establishing that there was interest amongst the student body.” Read More

Tyler Graduate Leads Painting Fundraiser

There are many worthwhile causes that require assistance to garner both interest and funds to support them, and even more artists who work hard to bring these goals to fruition. Recently, Joy Waldinger, a Tyler Alum and a professional artist, hosted a fundraising event to support students in need. Joy Waldinger graduated from Temple University with a BS in Art Education, and is working on her master's degree in restorative practices. Read More

Pepón Osorio wins College Art Association's 2018 Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement

January keeps getting better for Pepón Osorio, Laura Carnell Professor of Community Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. The College Art Association (CAA) announced today that Pepón had been named the 2018 Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement—only nine days after learning he had won a United States Artists fellowship. Pepón is the first artist of Puerto Rican descent to win the award. In a press release, CAA cited his "meticulous installations incorporating the memories, experiences and cultural and religious iconography of Latino communities and family dynamics." He joins a select 31-member club. Previous winners of the award include Hans Haacke, David Hammons, Jacob Lawrence, Yvonne Rainer and Nancy Spero. The award will be presented on Feb. 21, the first day of the CAA Annual Conference in Los Angeles. For more details, read our full-length story. Read More
