Architecture Students Design for Southeast Asian Market in FDR Park
Tyler architecture students designed structures to inspire stalls that will be built at the Southeast Asian Market's permanent site in Philadelphia's FDR Park as part of a two-part elective studio over spring and summer 2024. These courses featured a mix of students in Tyler’s architecture 4+1 program—an accelerated degree track leading to a bachelor of science in architecture and then a master of architecture—and graduate students enrolled in the two- and three-year track master of architecture programs.
The process began with students reviewing a survey completed by market vendors about the state of the market and how it should be structured in the future. Students learned more about the local Southeast Asian community and its culture when they visited the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia (CAGP)'s neighborhood and toured a temple in South Philadelphia. They also participated in a panel discussion about culture and functionality.
Students individually designed a permanent home for the market that included the market grounds and a preliminary vendor stall. Then, they worked in groups to collaborate on the stalls. The most promising designs were selected to be built at Temple's Ambler campus during the summer, where they will remain for the foreseeable future. Read more at Temple Now.
