The Seminar, which will be led by John Marciari, Charles W. Englehard Curator and Head of the Department of Drawings and Prints, will be held April 22, 2022. 

The Morgan holds one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive collections of drawings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, which will be the focus of an exhibition to be held in spring 2023. In advance of that exhibition, this seminar will look at the collection, giving an overview of Piranesi’s work, exploring the ways in which drawings functioned in Piranesi’s workshop, and highlighting certain problems in the study of his drawings. The seminar will be led by John Marciari, author of a forthcoming monograph on Piranesi as a draftsman.
