Dr. Emily Neumeier publishes essay on photography
Dr. Emily Neumeier has a new essay published in the edited volume Making Modernity in the Islamic Mediterranean (Indiana University Press, 2022). Her contribution, titled "The Muybridge Albums in Istanbul" traces how a landmark work in the field of photography—Eadweard Muybridge's Animal Locomotion—was co-opted by the University of Pennsylvania as an instrument of international diplomacy. The albums were gifted to the Ottoman sultan in the hopes of securing permits for their archaeological expeditions in the Middle East, a case study that demonstrates the potential for photography and archaeology to serve as mutual languages of knowledge production across the globe in the late nineteenth century.
