Glass is classified as neither a solid nor liquid— rather, it fluctuates between these states of matter. This scientific phenomenon was a point of inspiration for Form and Formless: Constellations of Knowledge, a new exhibition curated by Alpesh Kantilal Patel, Tyler’s Associate Professor of Global Contemporary Art, at the Robert Lehman Gallery at UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, New York.As Patel explained, the exhibition “meditates on the slipperiness rather than the fixity of identity categories” such as gender, sexuality, nationality, and race. In curating Form and Formless, he sought to foreground works that complicate the notion of identity as something that is singular and static.

Journeying from China to Philadelphia to study at Temple nearly 10 years ago, Ellen Zhang, TYL ’17, now gets to showcase the pride she has in her heritage as arts and culture manager at the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival. In that role she’s been able to make that dream a reality, helping curate the outdoors museum-like spectacle, and allow others to experience the culture she’s so incredibly passionate about. Tyler alum Emily Phillippy (BFA '12) has distinguished her jewelry store, Emily Chelsea Jewelry in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood, for its ethical stance on using 100 percent recycled precious metals, Fairmined gold and diamonds, and colored stones that are either recycled or can be traced back to responsible sources. “If we don’t know where it comes from, we won’t work with it,” she says.

As part of his artistic journey, Tyler alum Tim McFarlane (BFA '94) has in recent years veered toward the monumental.Putting his typical works on canvas or panel aside, McFarlane has preferred work at the large scale afforded him by murals and other wall-based installations -- applying acrylic paint, drawings and sculptural forms complete with silver and frosted Mylar, pushpins, nails, tape to walls and other surfaces.

Artist, writer, and poet Barbara Chase-Riboud (BFA '56) spoke with Serpentine Galleries, which organized a recent exhibition of work that spanned seven decades of her career. Barbara Chase-Riboud: Infinite Folds, which was on view October 11, 2022- April 10, 2023, showcased her " innovation in sculptural technique, exploring memory, history and power through monumental sculptures and works on paper," Serpentine Galleries writes. "Her unique approach to sculpture and materiality involve "the interplay between folds of cast bronze or aluminum and coils of wool and silk which are knotted, braided, looped, and woven.""For me," Chase-Riboud says as she opens the interview, "sculpture was never a hobby. Sculpture was something integral to life."

Peter Wang (Ph.D. 2017) recently accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Art History and Visual Studies at the School of Art and Visual Studies at the University of Kentucky. (UK SAVS) He is excited to be working with 30 some art history majors and a few MFA students in Curatorial Studies. After a one-year visiting assistant professorship at Saint Mary's College and a five-year period as a lecturer at Butler University, Peter has developed more than a dozen courses, and he looks forward to connecting his research with his teaching at Kentucky, including surveys and special topics on American art, modern/contemporary art, and history of photography. He will continue to work on his book manuscript on photography and the American road trip, while developing the next research project on Asian American art and visual culture.

Dowell Jr. (BFA ‘63), Professor Emeritus of Printmaking, was honored at the TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image's annual fundraiser, InVISION, on May 4, the proceeds of which support TILT’s programming and events, educational programs, exhibitions, and artist residencies. Dowell was recognized for his six decades-long career in fine art, painting, photography, and printmaking — works that he has shown in more than 50 solo exhibitions and that reside in the permanent collections of 70 museums.

After entering a design contest hosted by Sony Pictures and Columbia TriStar Marketing Group, Dionn Reneé (BFA ‘04) was named one of 10 “Selected Creators” worldwide whose work was used to promote the 2022 film Woman King starring Academy-Award winner Viola Davis. “I thought that my chances of winning weren’t high, but when I saw what the movie was about — empowering women, fighting for freedom — I wanted to submit no matter what,” Reneé says. “Everywhere the film went, the artwork was used for the official marketing campaign.”
