Scout Cartagena’s (BFA ‘22) multimedia work explores themes of memory, connection, and their identity as a queer, Afro-Latinx, non-able-bodied person. While at Tyler, Cartagena, a Glass major, focused on Glass and Printmaking and earned a certificate in Art Education to pursue a career in teaching. Now, Cartagena has won a prestigious Emerging Artist in Residence scholarship from the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, working alongside artists from all around the world.

Associate Professor of Instruction Bryan Satalino (MFA ‘13) approaches Graphic and Interactive Design from an innovative, entrepreneurial lens. He joined Tyler’s faculty in 2013 specifically to foster students’ understanding of the relationship between graphic design and business, and successfully founded The Hatchery, Tyler’s project incubator. He teaches students how to model their art as a business and provides them with tools to interact with real-world clients in bold and inventive ways.

Immediately after earning an MFA in Painting from Tyler in 2020, graduate Warith Taha scored a Tournesol Award from the Headlands Center for the Arts and a yearlong residency at NXTHVN, a non-profit incubator for emerging artists and curators of color in New Haven, Connecticut. Now his work is on view in Undercurrents, a group exhibition with NXTHVN’s Fellowship Program cohort at Sean Kelly Gallery in New York, from June 10 – August 5, 2022.

Sculptor, performance artist, and Tyler alum Doreen Lynette Garner (BFA ‘09) presents a solo exhibition titled “REVOLTED” at The New Museum from June 30-October 16. Her signature themes of body horror, rebellion, and the grotesque further a narrative of racial injustice and the “myth of white racial purity,” the exhibition description details.

Samara Weaver (BArch ‘11, MArch ‘13) has always been drawn to buildings, spaces, and the emotions they can evoke. She ties her early love of architecture to a childhood memory of Philadelphia’s grand, neoclassical 30th Street Station. When deciding on her education, Weaver chose to obtain both an undergraduate and graduate degree in architecture rather than the fine arts due to her search for a more “structured job market,” she recently told Art Watch Podcast.
