The Forum will be held at the University of Pittsburgh September 23-24; it is an annual graduate student workshop co-organized by Alvarez, Abigail McEwen (UMD), Jennifer Josten (Pitt) and is funded by the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA). The Forum was originally organized at the University of Maryland in March 2020, but subsequent years had to be delayed due to COVID.

Martha Madigan, Professor Emerita of Photography, sadly passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on August 22, 2022. Her more than four-decades career at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture left a longstanding impact on the Photography program faculty and students, who remember her for her warm personality and devotion to teaching. Dean Susan Cahan reflected on Madigan’s impactful teaching style: “Martha’s 40-year career at Tyler was marked by her love of teaching and strong relationships with students that often continued well beyond their graduation. Martha’s passionate mentorship is a lasting part of her legacy.”

This week, Tyler School of Art and Architecture became a satellite host for an installation by Peruvian artist and adjunct Ceramics Professor Kukuli Velarde in collaboration with Philadelphia’s The Clay Studio. The entire work, titled A Mi Vida X (To My Vida), consists of six clay multiple sculptures of infants. One of these unfired figures will reside in the Tyler courtyard until it can no longer withstand the elements of the outdoors.

This fall, Tyler’s Architecture and Environmental Design department welcomes three new full-time faculty members: Assistant Professor of Architecture Jeffrey Nesbit, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture Nathan Heavers, and Assistant Professor of Instruction in Planning and Community Development Ryan Devlin. Each brings a unique set of skills and knowledge, ranging from informal urban spaces to infrastructure to forest management. In separate interviews, the three discussed what drew them to Tyler, their practices, and how they feel they will enrich AED’s rigorous and diverse curriculum.

Associate Professor of Instruction Bryan Satalino (MFA ‘13) approaches Graphic and Interactive Design from an innovative, entrepreneurial lens. He joined Tyler’s faculty in 2013 specifically to foster students’ understanding of the relationship between graphic design and business, and successfully founded The Hatchery, Tyler’s project incubator. He teaches students how to model their art as a business and provides them with tools to interact with real-world clients in bold and inventive ways.
