Barbara Chase-Riboud (BFA '56) Reminisces on Tyler's Early Years

Artist, writer, and poet Barbara Chase-Riboud (BFA '56) spoke with Serpentine Galleries, which organized a recent exhibition of work that spanned seven decades of her career. Barbara Chase-Riboud: Infinite Folds, which was on view October 11, 2022- April 10, 2023, showcased her " innovation in sculptural technique, exploring memory, history and power through monumental sculptures and works on paper," Serpentine Galleries writes. "Her unique approach to sculpture and materiality involve "the interplay between folds of cast bronze or aluminum and coils of wool and silk which are knotted, braided, looped, and woven.""For me," Chase-Riboud says as she opens the interview, "sculpture was never a hobby. John Dowell (BFA '63) Honored by TILT Institute

Tyler alumnus John E. Dowell Jr. (BFA ‘63), Professor Emeritus of Printmaking, was honored at the TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image's annual fundraiser, InVISION, on May 4, the proceeds of which support TILT’s programming and events, educational programs, exhibitions, and artist residencies. Dowell was recognized for his six decades-long career in fine art, painting, photography, and printmaking — works that he has shown in more than 50 solo exhibitions and that reside in the permanent collections of 70 museums.  Read More

Alumna Finds an Intersection of Fine Art and High Fashion

A Closer Look at Tyler's Architecture Design Thesis Studio

In Tyler’s Architecture Design Thesis Studio, graduate students easily image a new world order: vertical agriculture to reduce the carbon footprint in food production, applied prostheses to salvage decaying buildings, convertible storm shelters for hurricane displaced survivors, and nuclear power sites as a focal point for recreational public spaces. These ideas were some of the ideas in presented in the projects in the Architecture Design Thesis Studio course for students completing Tyler’s Master of Architecture, a first professional degree that prepares students to design structures and that engages them with urgent urban, architectural, environmental and sociocultural issues.  Read More

Professor Tackles Game Play and Critical Thinking

Renee Jackson, Assistant Professor and Program Head of Art Education, will publish a board game with TU Press at the end of this year, Tales of Woo and Woe, which is now on display in the Charles Library as part of the exhibition Game On! Design and Play for a Sustainable Future. She discusses her practice, pedagogy, and the importance of connecting critical yet imaginative thinking to the world around us. Architectural Design Capstone Studio Project to be Displayed at Venice Architecture Biennale

Senior-level design courses at Tyler don’t typically build the designs that they conceive. This year, however, visiting critics Mario Gentile and Tyler alum Tim Barnes (BSArch '09) of Shiftspace Design along with help from Clifton Fordham, Associate Professor and Program Head of Architecture, are leading the students through the design and assembly of a pavilion destined for this summer’s 18th International Architecture Exhibition in the European Cultural Center in Venice, Italy.
